KL Engineering worked with the City of Madison to design a 1-mile connector trail from the Capital City Path to the northeast side of Madison. The project runs through the newly redeveloped Garver Feed Mill property and O.B. Sherry Park. The design incorporates a 10-foot wide asphalt trail, with two 14-foot wide prefabricated steel truss bridges over Starkweather Creek, and one over a wetland crossing to minimize wetland impacts. A mapped flood storage area is located within the trail corridor and extensive ditch grading was needed to compensate for flood storage fill due to the alignment of the trail. A unique aspect of the project is the conversion of Starkweather Drive to a one-way street. This allowed for the trail to be constructed within the previous footprint of the roadway, decreasing impervious area, and minimizing conflict with trees and greenspace along Starkweather Creek.
