CTH M has served as a critical east–west connection north of Madison, linking communities, employment centers, and regional destinations. As growth accelerated, the corridor struggled to keep pace. Congestion increased, travel times became unreliable, and the existing two-lane roadway no longer met the needs of daily users.
The CTH M Reconstruction Project reimagined this corridor as a modern, high-performing transportation facility. Expanding key segments to a four-lane divided roadway, reconstructing major intersections, and implementing access management strategies significantly improved traffic flow, reduced delays, and enhanced overall reliability for commuters, freight, and emergency responders.
This transformation also prioritized long-term value through thoughtful design and innovation. From hybrid bridge solutions to strategic reuse of existing infrastructure and materials, the project balanced performance, cost-efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Complex construction challenges, including unstable soils and environmental constraints, were met with adaptive solutions that kept the project moving forward.
More than a roadway improvement, this project delivers a corridor that supports mobility, strengthens regional connections, and enhances quality of life across Dane County.
The CTH M Reconstruction project was honored with a 2026 APWA WI Project of the Year Award in the Transportation category for projects between $5M–$25M.
