Developed Plan Fit within Existing Infrastructure

KL Engineering teamed with the staff at Harrington Beach State Park on a couple projects.

Campground Drainage Improvements

Several of the campsites within the Harrington State Beach Park experienced flooding damage during heavy rains. This resulted in closure of the campsites, which is an inconvenience to park users. Since campsites can be reserved online up to 11 months in advance, unexpected closures to campsites is challenging for the park staff to provide alternate accommodations.

KL Engineering worked with agency and park managers to develop a plan to redirect drainage away from the campsites experiencing flooding. The plan also addressed flooding of access paths to the walk way in the campsite area.

The developed plan kept costs in mind and was designed to fit within existing infrastructure constraints.

Entrance Roadway Improvements

The original project plan was to pulverize the roadway from the entrance station to the campground, which included the replacement of a small parking lot near the entrance station and three culvert pipes along the roadway. The total length of the roadway is approximately 2,240 lineal feet. Curb ramps near the entrance station were also replaced to bring them into compliance with ADA requirements.

The curb near the entrance station was in good shape, but had asphalt poured into the gutter pan. KL’s design included the removal of that pavement from the gutter pan and replacement in kind. Because of the pavement removal and the need to maintain grades in this area, the team removed all the pavement in this area instead of pulverizing it.

During the project it was noted that the existing loop detector and counter at the entrance station were not working. KL Engineering was able to add this work to the project utilizing the expertise from its traffic engineers and electricians.

KL Engineering provided construction oversight of both projects. Construction Cost: $140,000 & $270,000
