WIS 26 Lighting Systems

The WIS 26 Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) project included design of multiple lighting systems operated by WisDOT and the City of Janesville. Unique design requirements included integration with I-39 interchange system lighting, shared electrical services with ITS, DDI lighting, and illumination for a 200-ft wide underpass area. KL’s Jake Joyal and Mike Scarmon led the lighting design, which was an intensive effort over several years.

Joyal explains, “Innovation was key as there is not much precedence for DDI lighting designs. The lighting system included overhead cobra head lighting, as well as underdeck wall pack lighting, both designed to accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic.”

Scarmon added, “The lighting design process for I-39 was especially challenging and was a puzzle of various types of lighting across 10+ project segments constructed over different years – a mix of Janesville, WisDOT, and utility owned systems. An immense amount of planning and collaboration was required to deliver this project.”

This amazing project has been honored with four awards: a 2023 WisDOT Excellence in Highway Design Award, the ASCE Wisconsin Section 2023 Engineering Achievement Award, the ACEC Wisconsin 2024 Engineering Excellence “Best of State” Award, and a 2024 ACEC National Recognition Award.
