America Recycles Day – 2025

Graphic includes compost related images, and the text "KL Engineering composted 2010 lbs of waste this year = 90 Gallons of gas!!!" with some celebratory cartoon people.

Sunday, 11/15 was America Recycles Day. This nationally recognized initiative has long been dedicated to encouraging folks to reduce, reuse, and of course recycle where possible. Recycling typically brings to mind bottles and cans. But food waste also can be recycled, AND it can be a big problem when it isn’t. At least 20 percent of what ends up in landfills is food. When organic materials like food scraps break down in landfills, they release methane gas, which is 27 times more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

KL is committed to reducing that impact. We work with Green Box to collect coffee grounds, lunch scraps, and other compostable materials from our kitchen. These items are picked up every two weeks and turned into compost instead of harmful emissions.

This year, we set a goal to keep at least a ton of the compostable materials from our office out of a landfill. We are happy to announce that we broke that record this month! We have composted 2000 lbs of waste. That is equal to an environmental offset of almost 90 gallons of gas.

Individual choices can have a large impact on our planet. Together, we can make a difference.
