Today is Professional Engineers Day! We are happy to celebrate our PEs and all of their hard work. Becoming a Professional Engineer shows dedication, as well as expertise, in the field.

When asked about what it means to have the PE credentials, Shelly Harris said, “To me having a PE means that I can go as far in my career as I want. There are numerous opportunities that open up once you receive these credentials — ranging from being able to work on more challenging projects to the confidence it instills in our clients. My advice to those deciding whether to take the exam or not is to just go give it a shot. What is the worst that can happen? You fail and can take it again, if desired. The lessons you learn about yourself and the confidence in your abilities are worth the risk.”

Another one of our team members, Arielle Lewien, recently received her credentials after putting in her time studying and preparing. “My coworker’s encouragement helped me prepare for the exam. KL also has a great library of resources and study questions that helped me a lot!” Although the test is long and daunting, the excitement of passing makes it all worthwhile. ” It was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders that I had been carrying since I graduated college. I felt proud of myself for being committed to studying especially in the summer and fall when I wanted to be doing other things. Knowing that I could pass an 8-hour exam gave me confidence in my job and in other aspects of my life too.”

One must pass the PE exam plus have four years of experience before the initials ‘PE’ can be listed after one’s name. There are folks at KL who have succeeded in completing the exam but aren’t using the credentials just yet. They are proud of themselves for passing the test and happy with the support they received from KL in their journey. “KL gave me plenty of resources to utilize and talking to my coworkers who had already taken it was really helpful,” said Natalie McCraw.

“I do not have the PE stamp yet. I did not know that not all civil engineers went on to get their PE license, which makes it even more special. I cannot wait to be able to label myself a Professional Engineer in the future and live up to the expectations that title upholds,” said Nathan Rullman, who will be certified starting in June of 2025. “I recommend that people who want to be PEs take the exam as soon as they can. To best prepare, I’d also suggest broadening your net for project types and work types to help cover most elements of design, which KL encourages. They let you diversify as a young staff engineer, which helps a lot when studying for the PE exam.”

We are thankful for the hard work of all of our engineers and are happy to uplift those who decide to take the PE exam as well!

This is the 9th annual Professional Engineers Day, an event started by National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) to celebrate the commitment made by professional engineers across the United States to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
