2023 WisDOT Design Award Winning Teams

Two group photos, showing the KL Design Team on top and the Project Team on bottom. Red background with white stripe in middle, showcasing the award title and project, as mentioned in the post, and a gold award ribbon with the WisDOT logo in the center.

We celebrate the people that helped make this award-winning project a reality. The KL team (top photo) transformed the I-39 / STH 26 intersection from a rural cloverleaf to Wisconsin’s 3rd Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). They coordinated with WisDOT and the City of Janesville among other stakeholders, teamed with Westbrook Associated Engineers and RA Smith National, and mentored Burse Surveying & Engineering.

The project doubled the traffic capacity of I-39 (from US 14 to Kennedy Road), enhanced safety, and provided elements that benefited motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, businesses, and the natural environment.

Many thanks to our project team (bottom photo) and to WisDOT for honoring our work with a 2023 Excellence in Highway Design award.

Congratulation to all the KL staff who had a hand in this project, which was practically everyone! But we especially thank Brad Domasky, Kyle Thompson, Brad Halvensleben, Dan Ryan, Josh Mercier, and Matt Regnier for their hard work and long hours on this project.
