Reliable Restoration of CTH D Causeway

Graphic includes a "before" photo showing the flooding on the causeway, and an "after" photo of the completed project.

For decades, the CTH D Buffalo Lake Causeway created ongoing challenges for the Marquette County community. Frequent flooding made the roadway unreliable, cutting off access and forcing long detours for residents, farmers, school buses, and emergency responders. What was once a persistent problem is now a dependable, year round connection that supports daily life and public safety.

Through thoughtful design and strong collaboration, this project transformed a vulnerable roadway into resilient infrastructure built to withstand future conditions. Raising the causeway above historic flood levels restored reliable, year-round access for residents, school transportation, emergency responders, and agricultural operations. Eliminating flood-related closures reduced travel time uncertainty, improved emergency response reliability, and strengthened connections across the lake.

We are incredibly honored to have this work recognized with a 2026 APWA WI Public Works Project of the Year Award, as well as a 2026 ACEC WI Engineering Excellence Best of State Award. Thank you to Marquette County, our partners, and everyone involved for trusting us to help deliver a solution that will serve the community for generations to come.
