July is National Recreation and Park Association’s Parks and Recreation month! This month is not only about celebrating all parks and trails have to offer for recreation, but also to honor the 160,000+ full-time park and recreation professionals — and countless seasonal workers and volunteers — who make spaces like this possible. This year’s theme is #BuildTogetherPlayTogether.
Did you know Wisconsin is home to 44 State Trails, covering over 1,700 miles, as well as over 100 rail-trails spanning nearly 2,000 miles? One is the Elroy-Sparta Trail, which was the first rails-to-trails project in the USA. The trail was originally constructed in 1965 and stretches 32.5 miles. It features three historic railroad tunnels, lush scenery, and charming small towns along the way. KL Engineering was honored to be part of this project’s recent reconstruction and continues to share about our involvement through presentations like one earlier this year for the International Trail Summit in Madison.
This trail is a shining example of how infrastructure can be reimagined for recreation and community connection. Let’s keep building together, so we can keep playing together.
