University Avenue Pedestrian Bridge
Structures – Planning

KL Engineering designed the reconstruction of University Avenue from Shorewood Boulevard to University Bay Drive. The project is in a highly confined urban setting with extremely limited right-of-way.
A bicycle / pedestrian overpass will be constructed to improve safety by replacing the busy at-grade crossing of University Bay Drive just north of the WSOR railroad tracks. The 362-foot long, seven-span structure will be a combination of concrete slab approach spans and a 108-foot long prefabricated steel truss main span at the University Bay Drive crossing. The design of the main span piers accommodated key utility facilities to minimize relocations. Concrete panel retaining walls were used for the connections to the at-grade path. KL Engineering coordinated the aesthetic treatments for the structures with the Village of Shorewood Hills and the City of Madison. Stone formliner, decorative patterns, and concrete staining were used to replicate the aesthetics of a nearby historic building.
