Transportation Design: Intersections

STH 35, LaCrosse County

KL Engineering completed the design of STH 35 (2nd Avenue) from Oak Forest Drive to 2nd Avenue SW in the City of Onalaska. Initially, five design alternatives were developed for the project and presented to the public. The preferred alternative was then chosen based on public input, costs, impacts, and traffic capacity. This alternative involved realigning Oak Avenue, Hilltopper Drive and Oak Forest Drive to create a four-legged intersection. The STH 35 intersections with Oak Forest Drive and 2nd Avenue SW were reconstructed to provide additional turn lanes and medians. Work on STH 35 also included pavement rehabilitation and widening.

As part of the project, the Onalaska Tourism Center and the Great River State Trail trailhead were relocated. Close coordination with WisDOT, WDNR and City of Onalaska was needed in order to agree upon a mitigation plan. The plan included temporarily relocating the Tourism Center and providing temporary facilities for the trail head until the Tourism Center relocates to a permanent facility. Construction of this $1.2 million project was completed in 2006.
