Transportation Design: Urban Rehabilitation

Forest Home Ave., Milwaukee

KL Engineering completed the final design and PS&E documents for this 5.3 mile urban rehabilitation and reconstruction project along STH 24 (Forest Home Avenue) in the cities of Milwaukee and Greenfield and the villages of Hales Corners and Greendale, in Milwaukee County.

The project involved resurfacing the existing asphalt pavement. In addition, improvements were made to the signalized intersections along STH 24 including new signals and street lighting, longer left turn lanes and upgraded pedestrian accommodations. The project also included shoulder widening, concrete barrier, new sidewalk, two bridge deck overlays and replacement of the decks on the three bridges over IH 43/894. KL Engineering completed the Type 2 Transportation Management Plan, Design Study Report, two Public Informational Meetings and the 90% PS&E in five months.

Challenges on this project included meeting the accelerated schedule and coordination between the consultants who completed the bridge and traffic signal design. KL Engineering also effectively coordinated with the four communities that the road passes though, as well as Milwaukee County, to facilitate local agreements.

Construction of the project was completed in June 2010 at a cost of $15.5 million.
